- Stop聽smoking. If you are not a smoker, do not start smoking. Teach your children about the tremendous harm from smoking so that would get rid of the worries in their early lives. Many smokers started smoking when they are still young, knowing little about smoking. Help from parents would greatly reduce the risk of cancer for their children. Stop smoking. Quit smoking now even if you have already smoked for years. Consult your doctor for the best ways to quit smoking. Just follow your employer鈥檚 protection measures. For example, if you are required to wear a mask for protection, always wear it. Consult your doctor for more measures for protections. Your risk of lung damage from these carcinogens increases if you smoke.
- Choose a healthy diet. Diet with a various fruits and vegetables may be the best choice for you. Food sources of vitamins and nutrients decrease the risk of lung cancer by a certain degree. However, avoid taking large doses of vitamins in pill form, as there may be some unknown harms to health. For example, researchers hoping to lower the risk of lung cancer in heavy smokers mix pills with beta carotene supplements. Results showed the supplements actually had the reverse effect on smokers.
- Drink alcohol moderately. Cap yourself to one drink if you are a woman or two drinks per day if you are a man. People older than 65 should take less than one drink each day.
Exercise moderately. Make determination to do exercises for no less than 30 minutes on most days of the week. If you don鈥檛 have this habit, start now slowly right now and continue that by adding more exercises. Swimming, walking and biking may be your good choices too. Walk the way between home and your workplace if possible, and take the stairs up instead of the elevator.
