Generally speaking, there is no certain way to treat canker sores. There are many home remedies for canker sores.

The one I find effective and can be easily found at home without going out ad buying things is applying a small amount of baking soda on the canker sore. If the sore is not causing a lot of pain do not use baking soda as it is very painful, but it will pay off. After applying the baking soda it will be sore for a while, but then the pain will signifigantly ease. Continue regularly if there is a lot of pain.

If the canker sore lasts for more than 1-2 weeks, is consistantly painful, or seems to be spreading contact a doctor. I hope this helps.

Of course, there are some other effective natural remedies:
1) Even people with exceptional dental hygiene can experience the pain of canker sores, especially if they use commercial, chemical-based toothpaste.
2) Ingredients such as sodium lauryl sulfate can irritate the tender lining inside the mouth and if it comes into contact with a canker sore, the pain can be excruciating.
3) Baking soda and water has long been used as a natural toothpaste and is often recommended for persons with canker sores.
4) For those with canker sores, the healing process may be spurred along by a salt-water rinse after brushing their teeth.
5) It may also help remove any sores just beginning to heal and aid in the prevention of gum disease.
6) For the pain, topical anesthetics used for teething babies can be helpful. Apply the gel with a q-tip directly on the sore for immediate pain relief.
